Varuthini Ekadashi 2017 - 22 April (Saturday)

Varuthini Ekadashi also known as Baruthani Ekadashi usually falls on Ekadashi during the month of Chaitra or Vaishakha. Prayers and rituals mark this day and devotees worship Vamana avatar of Lord Vishnu in a special way.

Scriptural Reference

A reference of Varuthini Ekadashi has been made in Bhavishya Purana. God Krishna narrates the relevance of Varuthini Ekadashi to King Yudhisthira as he mentions that on this auspicious day animals could free themselves from the cycle of birth and death. Similarly any person suffering from a life threatening disease could be cured if they pray to Lord Vishnu on Varuthini Ekadashi.

Donating to the needy brings luck on Varuthini Ekadashi. A detailed account of objects that could be donated has been listed in Bhavishya Purana. Donating horse, elephant, land, sesame seeds respectively will bring luck to the devotees on Varuthini Ekadashi.

If a person decides to donate on Varuthini Ekadashi, the ancestors and family members will benefit. In Hindu mythology it is generally believed that giving one's daughter in marriage or performing Kanyadaan is the biggest daan (donation). However, if the devotees perform the fast on Varuthini Ekadashi with full religious fervor, benefit of hundred Kanyadaan follows.

Rituals

Just as on other Ekadashi days, Lord Vishnu is worshiped on Varuthini Ekadashi as well. His fifth avatar Lord Vamana is specially worshiped on the occasion. Devotees make special preparations for the day wherein they have to follow certain rules to make the occasion fruitful for them and everyone else.

Devotional songs are sung during the night hours and everyone in the family participates in the festivities.

Certain activities as shaving one's head, indulging in gambling and applying oil on body should be avoided on this day. Devotees usually observe fast on Varuthini Ekadashi and those who take food one time during this Ekadashi are advised not to consume black gram, chickpea, honey, paan leaves and spinach.

It is believed that if devotees follow all the rituals concerned with Varuthini Ekadashi in true earnest, the devotee's family will be protected from all evils.

Kings like Mandhaata and Dhundhumaar achieved salvation by fasting on Varuthini Ekadashi. Lord Shiva once beheaded the fifth head of Lord Brahma and got a curse in return. Eventually Lord Shiva was freed from his sins on keeping a fast on Varuthini Ekadashi.

Fasting on Varuthini Ekadashi is considered to bring great fortunes for the devotees. A Vrat (fast) kept on Varuthini Ekadashi is similar to performing penance for around thousand years. The fasting procedure for Varuthini Ekadashi is different from other festivals. The devotees need to eat only once, a day before the this Ekadashi.

A complete fast needs to be observed on Varuthini Ekadashi and devotees must follow up with chanting religious sermons in praise of Lord Vamana, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.Performing religious deeds on Varuthini Ekadashi is considered auspicious and devotees in North and South India celebrate the day with faith, devotion and religious fervor.
