Konkan Turtle Festival 2024- March-April

Konkan Turtle Festival is celebrated each year in the form of a unique conversation program, which reflects the fact that Olive Ridley turtles are on the verge of extinction. The main objective of organizing this event is to educate people to a maximum extent regarding the successful ways of taking care of various turtles in the best possible manner.

The Konkan Turtle Festival is an annual event held along the Konkan coast in India, primarily focused on the conservation of marine turtles. This festival typically takes place between November and March, which is the nesting season for sea turtles.

The festival aims to raise awareness about the importance of protecting sea turtles and their habitats. It often involves activities such as beach clean-ups, turtle nesting site monitoring, and educational programs. Volunteers and local communities work together to ensure the safety of nesting turtles and their hatchlings.

It is celebrated in Velas village of Maharashtra in March spread across a period of 14 days. This is the exact period during which the precious Olive Ridley turtles are known to come to the seashore to lay eggs and return to the sea.

Reasons for Organizing Konkan Turtle Festival

The Konkan Turtle Festival is organized for several important reasons:

1. Conservation Awareness: The primary goal is to raise awareness about the conservation of sea turtles, which are often threatened by habitat destruction, pollution, and poaching.

2. Protecting Nesting Sites: The festival helps to monitor and protect nesting sites along the Konkan coast. Ensuring that these sites are safe from human interference and environmental hazards is crucial for the survival of turtle populations.

More recently, the festival has been spread over to 30 villages of Maharashtra. They ensure that maximum eggs laid by the turtles should be hatched. Perhaps, the biggest challenge that both SNM and KMM face in common is to find the best way to educate maximum people towards organizing the event most successfully.

Successful protection of rare species of Olive Ridley turtles is something that is of prime concern here. Mahalaxmi Temple is considered to be an ideal place. Not only this, it has amazing scenic beauty as well. On an average, several hundreds of eggs are laid by the turtles here and then baby turtles are hatched and Arabian Sea.
