Pitru Paksha is a sacred period in Hindu culture dedicated to paying homage to our ancestors. To maintain the sanctity of these 16 days and ensure the satisfaction of the departed souls (Pitrs), certain austerities and non-indulgences are prescribed. Following these guidelines is believed to bring peace to the ancestors and, in turn, secure their blessings for the family's prosperity.

1. Dietary Austerities (The Sattvic Lifestyle)

The food we consume during Pitru Paksha is believed to affect our mental purity and the vibration of our offerings.

  • Refrain from Non-Vegetarian Food: Consuming meat is strictly avoided as it is considered "Tamasic" (heavy and dark energy), which conflicts with the "Sattvic" (pure) nature of the Shradh rituals.

  • Avoid Onion and Garlic: These are known as "stimulant" foods that can disturb the meditative and somber state of mind required for ancestral worship.

  • Say No to Junk Food: The focus should be on simple, home-cooked meals that are offered to the gods and ancestors first (Prasad).

2. Physical Austerities and Grooming

During this fortnight, descendants traditionally observe a period of semi-mourning and simplicity.

  • Avoid Shaving and Haircuts: Refraining from grooming is a traditional sign of respect and focus on the spiritual over the physical. While modern lifestyles may make this difficult, it is still practiced by the person actually performing the main Shradh rites.

  • Avoid New Purchases: Buying new clothes, vehicles, or starting a new business is traditionally avoided. This ensures that the mind is focused on the past (ancestors) rather than future material gains.

3. Spiritual Knowledge and Recitals

Engaging the mind in sacred literature is considered one of the most effective ways to satisfy the ancestors. Specific recitals include:

  • Garuda Purana: This text depicts the journey of the soul after death and provides deep insights into the afterlife.

  • The Story of Nachiketa (Katha Upanishad): This features the "Yama Gita," where the Lord of Death, Yama, explains the mysteries of life and death to the young, devoted Nachiketa.

  • Ganga Avatarana: Reading the chapter on the descent of the Holy Ganges from the Valmiki Ramayana is believed to grant immediate satisfaction to the Pitrs.

4. Ritualistic Obligations

  • The Tithi Rule: It is obligatory to perform the "Shradh" rite on the specific Tithi (lunar day) of the ancestor's passing.

  • The Charity Alternative: If for any unavoidable reason a full ritual cannot be performed, the website and scriptures state that food must be distributed to the poor. Acts of charity are seen as the ultimate substitute that the ancestors accept as an offering.

5. Proper Conduct and Ethics

  • Avoid Conflict: Quarrels, harsh speech, and anger during this period are said to repel the peaceful energy of the ancestors.

  • Feeding Animals: Offering food to cows, dogs, and crows is essential. Crows, in particular, are considered the messengers of Lord Yama; if they accept the food, it is a sign that the ancestors are satisfied.
