Amarnath Yatra to the holy pilgrimage starts every year in late July on Ashad purnima and ends in beginning of August on Shawan Purnima -  the day of Raksha Bandhan. Every year large number of devotees eagerly waits for this yatra to a holy cave situated at the altitude of 3880 meters or 12225 feet. Government also makes necessary security arrangements for devotees, to successfully complete their holy journey. Government. also arranges for staying, cooking and medical facilities on the way to the holy cave.

The Journey Can Be Divided Into Two Parts: 

1. First - Way to Jammu

The first part of the journey is easier and convenient as compared to second part. One can reach Jammu by following:

Airways:

The nearest airport is Srinagar- the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. Srinagar is also known as "Paradise on Earth" is awesome place to visit having places like  Dal Lake, Nagina Lake, Shankaracharya Temple, Mughal Gardens etc. There are daily flights to Srinagar from Delhi and Jammu and even on particular weekdays from Chandigarh and Amritsar.

 Railways:

The nearest Railway Station is Jammu – the winter Capital of Jammu & Kashmir. Jammu is also known as "City of Temples". The most important places to visit here are Raghunath Temple, Mahadev Mandir and other temples. Jammu is well connected to other stations through out the country.

Roadways:

Jammu and Srinagar are connected well through road. One can easily hire Buses or Taxi to reach here from any place.

2. Second - From Jammu to the Holy Cave.

The second part of the journey is a tough one but this doesn’t affect the number of devotees. This part can be covered by road only by following two optional routes:

Jammu – Pahalgam – Holy Cave:

The distance from Jammu to Phalgam (315 Km) can be easily covered by taxi or bus on road. There is bus facility available by the state govt. of Jammu and Kashmir also. The route from Phalgam to the Holy Cave is covered via chandanwari, Pissu Top, Sheshnag and Panchtarni.

How to Reach Amarnath

Jammu- Baltal- Holy Cave (414 km) :

The distance from Jammu to Baltal (400 Km) can be easily covered by taxi or bus on road. There is bus facility available by the state govt. of Jammu and Kashmir also. The route from Baltal to the Holy Cave is covered via Domail, Barari Marg and Sangam.

Useful Data Related to Altitude and Distance:

The holy shrine of Amarnathji - naturally formed ice- lingam of the Lord Shiva is located at the end of Lidder Valley, stands at the altitude of 3,888 m. and is 363 Kms from Jammu via the route of Phalgam and 414 Kms. from Jammu via the route of Baltal.
