Goddess Durga is an incarnation of Devi or the Mother Goddess, a unified symbol of divine shakti. She is believed to be the supreme reality in the Hinduism, the one who manifested when evil forces threatened the very existence of the Gods. The literal meaning of Durga in Sanskrit is the one who is invincible and indomitable.

The birth of this Hindu Goddess Durga was caused to destroy the demons who threatened the existence of the Gods in heaven. All Hindu Gods offered their radiance to her creation and each formed part of Durga's body.

The goddess is portrayed in Hindu texts as having ten powerful hands, mounted on tiger with her full radiance. She holds powerful weapons like Shiva's trident, Vishnu's chakra, Kuber's mace and Indra's thunderbolt in all her arms.

She is referred as Mahishasura-Mardini Durga for assassinating the ferocious demon Mahishasura. On her birth she was mounted on a fierce tiger and looked immensely beautiful as well as brutal.

The Durga form of Devi is the most worshipped incarnation of Shakti. Goddess Durga's love for her children as the mother of universe is ever enduring. She is worshiped both for her ferocious and motherly form.

Two of the most popular festivals dedicated to Goddess Durga are Navratras and Durga Puja and are celebrated in great fervor and spirit across North India and West Bengal.
