Hanuman, the monkey God is believed to live eternally and is known for his power, valor and strength. He is also considered a wise yogi and brahmachari. Believed to be an avatar of Lord Shiva, he has helped Lord Rama in his fight against the evil forces. Lord Hanuman is worshiped across India as a symbol of strength, devotion and perseverance. He is worshiped especially on Saturdays and Tuesdays when people keep fast and make special offerings to him.

Life of Hanuman

Hanuman was the son of Anjana Devi, a celestial woman but born as a monkey woman because of a curse. Vayu Deva is considered to be the father of Hanuman as he was responsible for carrying a portion of payasam which resulted in the birth of Hanuman. He grew up to be a strong and naughty boy who could travel as fast as the wind.

It is said that one day he was so hungry he mistook the glowing sun to be a fruit and ran after it. Such was his power and will. Lord Indra was angry at this hit him with his thunderbolt. At this Vayu Deva was very upset and he stopped blowing wind and the whole universe was in trouble. It was only after Hanuman received blessings from all Gods, did he start blowing wind again.

Hanuman in his youth learned most of his skills from Surya Bhagvan and mastered the scriptures. His tremendous power of concentration only required 60 hours to learn the scriptures. As guru dakashina, he decided to serve Sugriva, the son of Surya and the monkey king, all his life.

In Ramyana, he played a very important role in aiding Ram to get back Sita from the clutches of the Ravana from Lanka. He helped Ram to cross the ocean by building a setu or bridge across the ocean with the help of his vanar sena. He also flew to Sanjeevani Mountain to get the medicinal herb to revive Lakshman, who was injured in the battle.

Hanuman also finds mention in Mahabharata and features in the great epic as a friend of Bhima since both of them were born from the blessings of the Wind God. He stood by the Pandavas in the Kurukshetra War and protected Arjuna’s chariot.
