The planet Mercury is believed to be the son of Chandra (the moon) and Tara or Rohini. According to Hindu mythology, he is the god of merchandise and protector of Merchants. Budha is Hindi name for the planet.

Mercury is a cool, eloquent planet of greenish color. He is represented as one holding a scimitar, a club and a shield and riding upon a winged lion in Ramghur temple while in some other image he holds a scepter and lotus and fly on a carpet or an eagle or a chariot that is being pulled by lions.

Budha supervise over 'Budhavara' or Wednesday. The daughter of Vaivasvata Manu, Ila is his consort and Pururava is his son. Budha, the lord of Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, and Revati nakshatra is usually a calm Graha.

Budha affects the intellectual power, intelligence, communication and analytic ability. Skin, science, mathematics, business, education and research are also on the responsibility of Mercury.

Astrological Importance

Budha is usually a benefic planet, until and unless another malefic planet joins him. If the co-planet of Budha is malefic he also becomes malefic. Mithuna (Gemini) and Kanya (Virgo) is ruled by Mercury. It is exalted in Kanya and fall in Meena (Pisces). Budha is friendly with the Sun and Venus, hostile to the Moon and neutral towards the other planets.
