Son of Bhrgu and Urjaswathi Shukra is preceptor of the Daityas and the guru of the Asuras. He is synonymous to the planet Venus and is one of the Navagrahas which presides over Shukravar or Friday.
He is potrayed as a white complexion, middle-aged and handsome man holding a stick, beads and a lotus and sometimes a bow and arrow. He mounts on a camel, horse or crocodile.
Astrological Importance
In Vedic astrology Shukra (Venus) is considered an important benefic planet and rules over the signs Vrishabha (Taurus) and Tula (Libra), exalted in Meena (Pisces), and fall in Kanya (Virgo). The planets Mercury and Saturn are friendly to Shukra, the Sun and Moon are hostile and Jupiter and the rest are neutral.
Shukra is a creative planet and thus represents all the creative works like artistic talents, bodily and material life, the opposite sex, pleasure and reproduction, feminine qualities and music and dance.
If Shukra is strong in the natal chart, the individual would be appreciative nature and enjoy pleasant relationship. Shukra is the lord of Bharani, Purva Phalguni and Purva Ashadha nakshatras or lunar mansions.
Shukra gives the power to control senses and help gain them fame and glory. Shukra is associated with Hindi month Jyeshtha (the guardian of Kubera's treasure).
