Phase 1: Building the Foundation (1947–1969)

  • 1947: Independence from British rule; Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru becomes the first Prime Minister.

  • 1948: Mahatma Gandhi assassinated (Jan 30); India wins its 4th Olympic Hockey Gold.

  • 1950: India becomes a Republic; the Constitution comes into force (Jan 26).
