A Biannual Celebration of Faith, Miracles, and Ancestral Devotion

In the heart of the Thar Desert, 30 km from Bikaner, lies one of the most enigmatic spiritual sites in the world. The Karni Mata Fair is a grand celebration where thousands of devotees gather at the Deshnoke "Rat Temple" to honor a 15th-century warrior-sage believed to be an incarnation of Goddess Durga. This is where the boundaries between the human and animal kingdoms dissolve in a spectacle of pure devotion.

Event Schedule for 2026

The Karni Mata Fair is unique because it occurs twice a year during the auspicious period of Navratri.

  1. Chaitra Fair (Spring): March  (The larger of the two festivals).

  2. Ashwin Fair (Autumn): October (Offers cooler weather for pilgrims).

1. The Legend: Why 25,000 Rats are Worshipped

The significance of the Karni Mata Fair is rooted in a miracle involving the Saint’s stepson, Laxman.

  • The Pact with Yama: When Laxman drowned in a pond, Karni Mata implored Yama (the God of Death) to revive him. Yama relented with a condition: Laxman and all of Karni Mata’s male descendants would be reincarnated as rats (Kabas) until they could be reborn back into the human family.

  • Living Ancestors: Today, the 25,000 rats inhabiting the temple are viewed as the living ancestors of the local Charan clan. To have one scurry over your feet is considered a divine blessing.

2. Rituals of the Deshnoke Fair

Unlike the commercial energy of larger fairs, the Karni Mata Mela is deeply intimate and traditional.

  • The Search for the White Kaba: Among thousands of brown rats, only a handful are white. Spotting a white rat is the ultimate stroke of luck; they are believed to be the manifestations of Karni Mata herself and her sons.

  • Mangla Aarti (4:00 AM): The day begins with the morning aarti. Priests offer milk and grain in large metal bowls. Devotees often share the Prasad (sanctified food) with the rats, believing it carries the Goddess's direct energy.

  • Jadula (First Haircut): Many Rajput and Charan families bring their infants to the fair for their first haircut, placing the locks at the deity's feet for lifelong protection.

3. Travel Guide: Reaching the Temple

  • From Bikaner: Deshnoke is just 30 km south of Bikaner. Private taxis and state buses run every 20 minutes from the Bikaner main bus stand.

  • By Rail: Deshnoke Railway Station (1 km from the temple) is well-connected to Bikaner, Jodhpur, and Jaipur.

  • By Air: The nearest airport is Nal Airport (Bikaner), though most travelers fly into Jodhpur for better connectivity.

4. Insider Tips for the Modern Traveler

  • The Golden Rule: Be careful where you step! Tradition dictates that if a rat is accidentally killed, it must be replaced with a solid gold or silver rat statue of the same weight.

  • Health & Hygiene: Despite the high density of rodents, there has never been a recorded case of plague or disease at the temple. However, you must enter barefoot. If you are uncomfortable, wear thick white socks (usually permitted).

  • Photography: Professional photography is allowed, but always be respectful during the Aarti. The best shots of the "Kabas" are found near the milk bowls in the main courtyard.
