In the Hindu calendar the month of Paush or Magh denotes the festival of Makar Sankranti. Sankranti normally falls on January 14th every year.

Makar Sankranti PujaOn this day, the Sun enters Makar Rashi in Uttarayan. Sankranti is a festival celebrating the commencement of harvesting season. In this period, days start becoming longer and the nights become shorter. It is believed that on this day, in the sangam of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati rivers, Devtas and Devis take the form of human beings and take a dip in the confluence of the holy rivers.

Preparation for the Puja

  • A day before Makar Sankranti, small size ladoos with black and white til, mixed with jaggery are made.
  • For Baayna, in one thaali place two ghevars, four black til ladoos, four white til ladoos and some money. In some houses little butter, naaljodi and boondi ladoos are also kept.
  • If the married sister or daughter resides in same city, Baayna is sent to her house a day before Sankranti.
  • 14 items can be given to Brahmins like thermos flask, blankets, fans, torch and utensils.


Vidhi / Method of performing the Puja

  • For Baayna, in one thaali place two ghevars, four black til ladoos, four white til ladoos and some money. Spinkle roli and chawal on the baayna. Then apply tilak to yourself. Covering your folded hands with saree pallu / odni, rotate them over the baayna fourtimes. Then give the baayna to your mother-in-law by touching her feet. Baayna could also be given to your elder sister-in-law, nanad (husband s sister) or any woman elder to you. If you are alone in the house, you can keep the baayna in the puja room and later either give it to a Brahmin or it can be sent to the temple.
  • On this day any 14 articles like thermos flask and blankets are given to 14 brahmins. Keep the 14 articles, some token money , sprinkle oil, chawal and then give it to the Brahmins.
