Chandrabhaga Fair

A Divine Blend of Spirituality and Heritage in Rajasthan

The Chandrabhaga Fair, also known as the Kartik Mela, is one of Rajasthan's most soul-stirring cultural events. Held annually in the historic town of Jhalrapatan (the "City of Bells") in the Jhalawar district, this fair is a mesmerizing confluence of religious devotion and rural commerce.

Named after the sacred Chandrabhaga River, the fair attracts thousands of pilgrims, traders, and tourists who gather to witness a tradition that has remained vibrant for centuries.

When is the Chandrabhaga Fair Celebrated?

The fair takes place during the auspicious month of Kartik (October–November) in the Hindu calendar. The most significant day is Kartik Purnima (the full moon night), when the festivities reach their peak.

  • Upcoming Dates: November 4th to 6th, 2025.

Key Highlights & Traditions

1. The Holy Dip (Snan)

On the night of Kartik Purnima, thousands of devotees congregate on the banks of the Chandrabhaga River. It is believed that a holy dip in these waters purifies the soul and washes away sins. The river is particularly sacred to followers of the Sun God.

2. Deepdan: The Evening of Lights

As dusk falls, the riverbanks come alive with Deepdan. Devotees float hundreds of lit earthen lamps (diyas) on the river, creating a shimmering golden reflection that symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness.

3. One of Rajasthan’s Largest Cattle Fairs

Beyond the spiritual rituals, the event is famous for its massive Cattle Fair. Similar to the Pushkar Mela, traders from across India bring livestock—including camels, horses, cows, and bullocks—for trade. It’s a rare opportunity to see Rajasthan’s rural economy and nomadic lifestyle up close.

4. Cultural Extravaganza

The Rajasthan Tourism Department organizes a 3-day cultural program featuring:

  • Folk Performances: Traditional music and dance by local artists.

  • Competitions: Engaging events like Turban Tying, Moustache contests, Matka Race, and Tug of War.

  • Shobha Yatra: A grand ceremonial procession from the Dwarkadhish Temple to the riverbanks.
