Manarcad Perunnal

The Eighth-Day Feast of Divine Grace

The Manarcad Perunnal, also famously known as the Ettunombu Perunnal (the Eight-Day Lent), is one of the most prestigious and spiritually significant Christian festivals in Kerala. Held at the historic St. Mary's Jacobite Syrian Cathedral in Manarcad, Kottayam, this annual event draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from across the globe, transcending religious boundaries.

Festival Overview: The Ettunombu Lent

  • Dates: September 1st to September 8th annually.

  • Duration: 8 Days of fasting and prayer.

  • Location: St. Mary's Cathedral, Manarcad (Kottayam District, Kerala).

  • Significance: Commemorates the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Religious & Historical Significance

The Manarcad Church is an ancient seat of faith, believed to be over a thousand years old. The festival is rooted in the tradition of Ettunombu, where devotees observe a strict eight-day fast to seek the blessings of Mother Mary.

For many, this is a time of "Vazhipadu" (offerings) and penance. Devotees often stay on the church premises for all eight days, participating in continuous prayer sessions, reading the Bible, and taking part in holy mass (Qurbana).

Key Rituals and Highlights

1. The Opening of the "Nada" (The Vision)

The most awaited moment of the festival is the Nada Thurakkal (Opening of the Sacred Portrait). The portrait of Mother Mary and the infant Jesus is kept behind a curtain for most of the year and is only revealed to the public during the festival days. Seeing this image is considered a moment of divine grace.

2. The Grand Procession (Rasa)

On the final three days (Sept 6th, 7th, and 8th), the atmosphere turns electric with the Rasa.

  • Thousands of devotees carry Muthukkuda (vibrant, silk-decked umbrellas) and Golden Crosses.

  • The procession is accompanied by traditional musical ensembles, creating a rhythmic, celestial ambiance that moves through the heart of Manarcad.

3. The Holy Tank and Offerings

Devotees visit the sacred church tank to perform ritualistic cleansing. Common offerings include Adima (surrendering oneself to the protection of Mother Mary) and the offering of Muthukkuda as a symbol of gratitude for answered prayers.

Expert Tips for Pilgrims

  1. Strict Fasting: If you plan to observe the Ettunombu, be prepared for a purely vegetarian diet and long hours of standing in prayer.

  2. The Crowd Factor: September 7th and 8th are the busiest. If you prefer a quieter experience, visit between September 1st and 4th.

  3. Dress Code: Modest attire is mandatory. Traditional Kerala wear (Saris for women, Mundu/Dhotis for men) is preferred but not strictly enforced as long as the clothing is respectful.

  4. Weather: September is the tail end of the monsoon in Kerala. Always carry a sturdy umbrella—not just for the rain, but for the sun during the long processions.
