The planet Mars is called ‘Mangal’ in Hindi. It is considered a fiery planet and is symbolized by the color red. Being an aggressive planet it is a representation of the god of war. He is believed to be the son of Prithvi or Bhumi, the Goddess Earth and hence also called ‘Bhauma.’
He is imagined as red as flame color and has four-arms, each carrying a trident (trishula), mace, lotus and a spear. Due to the color red, Mars is also called ‘Angaraka’ in Sanskrit. He is seen sitting on a ram. 'Mangal-var' (Tuesday) out of the seven days is presided by Mars.
The story behind the birth of Mangal grah says that once when Lord Shiva was meditating on Mount Kailash, three drops of perspiration dropped down to the earth from his forehead. Those drops developed into an infant, who was reddish in complexion and had four arms.
The goddess earth, Bhumi mothered the child.
When Bhaum grew up, he did a strong penance to please lord Shiva. Lord Shiva blessed him by granting him 'Mangala loka' (the Abode of Mangala). The same 'Bhauma' is recognized in the solar system as the Mangal grah (the planet Mars). The consort of Mangal is Jwalini.
