Lord Jhulelal, also known as Uderolal or Dariyalal, is the patron deity (Ishta Dev) of the Sindhi community. Revered as an incarnation of the Vedic Water God, Varuna, Jhulelal is more than a religious figure; he is the "North Star" for Sindhis worldwide, symbolizing their resilience, cultural identity, and the spirit of communal harmony.

Whether in India, Pakistan, or the global diaspora, the chant "Aayo Lal, Sabhainjo Jhal Lal" (The Lord has come, may he bless everyone) serves as a clarion call for unity.

The Legend of the Savior: Mirkhshah and the 40-Day Prayer

In the 10th century, the Sindhi people faced religious persecution under the tyrannical ruler Mirkhshah in the region of Thatta. In their desperation, the community gathered on the banks of the River Sindhu (Indus) and prayed for 40 days and nights without food or rest.

On the 40th day, a divine voice (Akashwani) proclaimed that a savior would be born to Ratanchand Lohana and Mata Devaki in Nasarpur. This 40-day penance is commemorated even today as the festival of Chaliho Sahib.

The Miracles of Uderolal

Born on the second day of the Chaitra month, the infant was named Uday Chand (The Rising Moon). He performed miracles from the moment of his birth:

  • The Swinging Cradle: His cradle would swing on its own, earning him the name Jhulelal (The Swinging Lord).

  • The Vision of the River: When he opened his mouth, his parents saw the mighty Sindhu River flowing and an old man riding a fish.

  • The Message of Oneness: When he eventually confronted Mirkhshah, Jhulelal taught that the God of the Hindus and the Muslims is one, famously saying, "Had the Almighty so desired, He could have ordained all to be born of one faith."

Major Festivals: Cheti Chand and Beyond

  • Cheti Chand: This is the Sindhi New Year and the birthday of Lord Jhulelal. It is the most important day for the community, marked by the Baharana Sahib procession.

  • Chaliho Sahib: A 40-day period of fasting and penance where devotees avoid luxuries, commemorating the original prayer for the savior.

  • Baharana Sahib: A beautifully decorated bronze tray (Thali) containing a flour lamp, sugar crystals, fruits, and an idol of Jhulelal, which is eventually immersed in a water body.

Jhulelal: A Bridge Between Faiths

One of the most remarkable aspects of Jhulelal is his status as a Sufi Saint among Muslims, who revere him as Sheikh Tahir or Khwaja Khizr. His shrines in Sindh are unique places where both Hindus and Muslims offer prayers side-by-side, making him a true ambassador of interfaith peace.
