Diwali falls on Amavasya (no moon day) in the month of Karthik. This day is observed as the main day of the five days of Diwali and its celebrated with immense fervor and enthusiasm in India. There are several customs and rituals that are followed by people based their faiths and beliefs. Besides lighting lamps, making rangolis, bursting firecrackers and decorating houses beautifully, the puja performed on the evening of Diwali is the most important part of the festival.Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha are worshiped religiously on the evening of Diwali. In many parts of India, especially in the states of West Bengal and Orissa, Goddess Kali is worshiped. Lakshmi is the Goddess of wealth, prosperity and success and its believed that on the evening of Diwali, she visits households and blesses them by bringing along wealth and prosperity into the homes. This is the reason why houses are cleaned and beautifully decorated and lit up to welcome her as its said that Lakshmi doesn t enter the houses that are dark and unwelcoming, as that attracts negative energy and becomes an obstacle in her way.
Elaborate preparations are made for the puja and after the puja is concluded the celebrations begin. People celebrate by wearing new clothes, decorating the house, exchanging gifts, playing cards and bursting firecrackers. New clothes, gifts and sweets are sent to the households of the married sisters and daughters.
As Diwali also signifies the beginning of a new year for the Hindu s, most of the business communities start their new financial year on the day after Diwali.
